Caring for Your Harris Tweed® Emma Easter Handcrafted Bag

Every Harris Tweed® bag in my Heritage Collection combines authentic Harris Tweed® cloth — handwoven by islanders in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland — with carefully selected leathers and water-resistant linings. The Orb certification mark guarantees provenance and quality. With the right care, your Harris Tweed® bag will look beautiful for years to come.

General Care Tips

  • Protect from Heavy Rain: Harris Tweed® is wool, which naturally repels light moisture, but prolonged soaking should be avoided. If your bag becomes damp, allow it to air dry naturally, away from direct heat sources such as radiators (Harris Tweed Authority, n.d.).

  • Brushing: Use a soft clothes brush to gently remove surface dust and dirt. Always brush in the same direction as the weave (Harris Tweed Authority, n.d.).

  • Spot Cleaning: For small marks, use a clean, damp cloth and gently blot (never rub). Avoid harsh detergents. For stubborn stains, a specialist dry cleaner experienced with wool fabrics is recommended (Harris Tweed Hebrides, n.d.).

  • Avoid Friction: Take care not to consistently rub your bag against rough surfaces, which can cause pilling (Harris Tweed Hebrides, n.d.).

Storage

  • Dust Bag: When not in use, store your bag in the dust bag provided, in a cool and well-aired space.

  • Shape Retention: Lightly stuff the bag with acid-free tissue paper to help it maintain its form.

  • Avoid Damp Areas: Keep your bag away from damp storage spaces to prevent mildew (National Museums Scotland, 2020).

  • Moth Protection: As Harris Tweed® is pure wool, consider using a natural moth deterrent (such as cedarwood or lavender sachets) if storing for long periods (Harris Tweed Hebrides, n.d.).

Caring for the Leather & Tweed Together

Many Harris Tweed® bags in my collection also feature premium leather elements:

  • Clean the tweed and leather separately, following the guidance for each material.

  • Never soak the entire bag in water or attempt machine washing.

Professional Care

For deep cleaning or restoration, seek a professional dry cleaner who has experience working with wool fabrics and leather trims. Always let them know the fabric is genuine Harris Tweed®.

✨ With thoughtful care, your Harris Tweed® Emma Easter Handcrafted bag will continue to carry the story of its Scottish heritage and Welsh craftsmanship for many years to come.
