Our Approach to Sustainability & Ethics

Why This Matters to Me

As a solo maker in South Wales, I believe in creating bags that last, not contributing to fast fashion waste. Every decision I make - from materials to pricing - reflects my commitment to doing business responsibly, even when it's harder or more expensive.

What I'm Actually Doing

Energy & Studio

  • Solar-powered studio in the Rhondda Valleys (though I don't currently measure the environmental impact or cost savings)
  • Energy-efficient sewing machines and equipment
  • Working from home reduces commuting emissions

Production Philosophy

  • Small batches only - typically 1-3 bags per design to avoid overproduction
  • Made-to-last construction - each bag takes 2-16+ hours to create properly
  • No mass production - ever
  • Limited fabric printing - I gauge interest before ordering materials to reduce waste

Materials & Sourcing

  • UK suppliers prioritised where possible to reduce transport emissions
  • Organic oilskin from a small UK business
  • Custom-printed canvas from a small family run business in the UK
  • Chrome-tanned leather - I'm honest that this isn't the most eco-friendly option, but it's durable and long-lasting
  • Vegan alternatives are available for some designs
  • FSC-approved packaging with recyclable tissue paper

Fair Pricing & Ethics

  • Real Living Wage pricing - I price my work at the current real living wage
  • No exploitation - everything made by me, in my studio
  • No sales or discounts - fair pricing from the start

Longevity Over Quantity

  • Water-resistant linings in every bag (though I don't currently track real-world effectiveness)
  • Premium hardware chosen for durability
  • Timeless designs that won't go out of style
  • Repair service offered when needed

What I'm Still Working On

I believe in being honest about areas where I could improve:

  • Measuring impact - I don't currently track environmental metrics from my solar panels or other practices
  • Hardware sourcing - Most hardware still comes from China due to cost constraints and lack of manufacturers offering what I need in the UK
  • Leather alternatives - Exploring more sustainable options as my business grows
  • Packaging - Always looking for better eco-friendly options

My Commitment

I'm not perfect, and I don't claim to be. What I promise is:

  • Honesty about my practices and limitations
  • Continuous improvement as my business grows
  • Quality over quantity in everything I make
  • Fair treatment of everyone in my supply chain (starting with myself)

Supporting Slow Fashion

Every Emma Easter Handcrafted bag is designed to be cherished, not discarded. When you buy from me, you're supporting:

  • A Welsh woman building a sustainable business
  • Local suppliers and British craftsmanship where possible
  • The slow fashion movement that values quality over speed
  • Transparent, ethical business practices

This page reflects our practices as of May 2025. I update this information as my business evolves.
